“Suspicious looking” delivery bakkie confiscated with 474,73 kilogram load of dagga by the Kimberley K9 Unit

Police underrated the estimated value of dagga

The police estimate the value of the dagga to be R1 per gram however R10+ per gram is more realistic which puts the value of the dagga at about R4.7 million.

The bust comes after the Kimberley K9 unit noticed a suspicious looking delivery bakkie and decided to interrogate the passengers.

Official police statement:

On Thursday 2014-12-11 at about 12h00, members of SAPS Kimberley K9 Unit were busy with their normal patrol duties in the Kimberley CBD area when they observed a white bakkie with two occupants inside. The vehicle was intercepted by the members as the car looked suspicious. At Schmidstdrift Street next to Tswelopele Correctional Centre police managed to stop the vehicle and upon searching the vehicle, with its occupants, Police found about 27 bags full of dagga (weighing at about 474,73 kilograms) with an estimated street value of around R474 730.00. The two suspects, aged 49 and 44 were immediately arrested and will be charged with dealing in dagga.

The two are expected to appear in Kimberley Magistrates’ Court soon.

The Kimberley Cluster Commander Major-General Jean Abrams has once again commended members from Kimberley K9 Unit for their swift action and vigilance as well as the diligent work that they have performed in spotting the vehicle and making an arrest. Major-General Abrams added that “criminal activities will not be tolerated and that members of the public must be patient with police during this festive season as more stop-and-search operations will be conducted to ensure that the community of the Northern Cape are free from crime”.
